American Girlhood: A Window into History - Jacqueline Dembar Greene Speech

A statement from Blake Changnon, founder, president, and CEO of The Changnon Family Museum of Toys and Collectibles:

Still thinking about how special this past weekend was!

One of the true highlights of “American Girlhood: A Window into History” at the Heinz History Center was hearing Jacqueline Dembar Greene speak about creating Rebecca Rubin’s stories. Jacqueline has a way of telling stories that completely mesmerizes you—her talk was heartfelt, funny, and so deeply thoughtful.

I especially loved hearing how she first got the call to write Rebecca. (She mentions her story in the American Girl Fan Club podcast episode, “All About Rebecca,” if you want to hear it.) What I didn’t know? She wrote the books all the way back in 2000… and had to wait nine years until they were finally released in 2009! Talk about patience and dedication.

It was such a joy to meet Jacqueline in person, to hear firsthand about the process behind bringing Rebecca’s world to life and have her sign my book. I hope to meet her again someday. More reflections from the weekend coming soon!
