Nanea’s Hawaiian Chicken Kabobs

We are so happy that you have joined us for our next program for our inaugural exhibit, American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters

For today’s program, we will be making Hawaiian Chicken Kabobs, a recipe brought to us by one of American Girl’s caring characters, Nanea. Her story takes place in 1941 during the attacks on Pearl Harbor.

Today’s recipe can be found online from Allrecipes. The following ingredients and directions make 8 servings. We hope you enjoy Nanea’s Hawaiian Chicken Kabobs.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons sherry

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

  • 8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 2 inch pieces

  • 1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained

Equipment

  • Skewers

  • Shallow glass dish

  • Spoon

  • Grill

  • Grill grate

Directions

  1. In a shallow glass dish, mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, sherry, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic powder. Stir the chicken pieces and pineapple into the marinade until well coated. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours.

  2. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.

  3. Lightly oil the grill grate. Thread chicken and pineapple alternately onto skewers. Grill 15 to 20 minutes, turning occasionally, or until chicken juices run clear.

  4. Enjoy and eat with your family and friends!

Did You Know: Pineapples have indeed for a long time been a symbol of Hawaii but they are not native to the Hawaiian islands. Pineapples can be traced back to their origin in South America, and are linked together with Hawaiʻi because of the large pineapple industry that was build on Hawaii in the early 1900s.
