Maryellen’s Pigs-in-a-Blanket

We are so happy that you have joined us for our next program for our inaugural exhibit, American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters

For today’s program, we will be making Pigs-in-a-Blanket, a recipe brought to us by one of American Girl’s enthusiastic and optimistic characters, Maryellen. Her story takes place in 1954 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Today’s recipe can be found online from Pillsbury. The following ingredients and directions make 48 servings. We hope you enjoy Maryellen’s Pigs-in-a-Blanket.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (8 oz) refrigerated crescent rolls (8 count)

  • 48 cocktail-size smoked link sausages or hot dogs (from two 14-oz packages)

Equipment

  • Small kitchen knife

  • 2 uncreased cookie sheets

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 375°F. Unroll both cans of the dough; separate into 16 triangles. Cut each triangle lengthwise into 3 narrow triangles.

  2. Place sausage on shortest side of each triangle. Roll up each, starting at shortest side of triangle and rolling to opposite point; place point side down on 2 ungreased cookie sheets.

  3. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown, switching position of cookie sheets halfway through baking. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm.

Did You Know: Pigs-in-a-blanket became popular in North America in the 1950s, as meat wrapped in dough. The name originates from the 1957 book "Cooking for Kids" by Betty Crocker.
