Meet Molly McIntire, a lively, loveable and patriotic girl living with her family in Jefferson, Illinois in 1944. Molly’s life seems to be upside down: the United States is involved in World War II, her father has left to take care of wounded soldiers and her mother has a job at the Red Cross. And everyone in America is serious and practical about what they buy and eat—even Mrs. Gilford and her yucky turnips.
Halloween is just around the corner and Molly dreams of dressing up as Cinderella. However, with the country at war, Halloween costumes like Cinderella are hard to get. Instead, Mom recommends that Molly and her friends create paper skirts and dress up as hula dancers. When her annoying big brother, Ricky, plays a mean trick, Molly and her friends are determined to get him back. But when one trick leads to another trick, will the fighting go too far?
