Happy Birthday, Addy

Spring has arrived in Philadelphia and now that Poppa has a job driving, Addy and her parents decide to move to a new home, a boarding house. At her new home, Addy makes a new friend named M’dear, an older blind woman who keeps Addy company after school. M’dear offers advice and even urges Addy to claim a day for her birthday.

When M’dear becomes sick, Addy volunteers to go get her medicine at the drugstore. While out, she experiences prejudice and danger. Addy is upset and doesn’t understand why. Wasn’t she free now? When Addy returns, M’dear helps her understand the true meaning of freedom. When everyone finds out that the war has ended, Addy finally claims that day as her birthday.
