Winters on Kirsten’s Minnesota farm are bitter cold. There is no time to play outside and everyone is stuck inside their small cabin. One day when Kirsten is allowed outside to help her brother Lars with his traps, she discovers an injured baby raccoon in the woods. She decides to bring him home. Trouble starts when the baby raccoon gets loose and accidentally starts a fire. The Larson’s entire home and everything in it is destroyed.

Kirsten is devastated and they move back to her uncle and aunt's farm. But an important, frightful discovery in the woods shines a light to a brighter future for Kirsten and her family—they discover the trapped furs of a neighbor who has passed away. With the new furs, Kirsten and her family are able to start over and purchase a new home. Life finally starts to feel normal for Kirsten and her family.
