Addy’s Surprise

It’s Addy’s first Christmas as a free person and without her Poppa, brother Sam and baby sister Esther. She knows it will be hard for both her and her Momma, but when she spots a beautiful red scarf in a shop, Addy is determined to work hard and save her money to buy it for Momma and brighten the holiday. 

However, when Addy helps newly freed slaves at Trinity AME Church, Addy is torn between saving her money for Momma’s scarf or to help the newly freed slaves. Addy decides to donate her savings to the church to help other newly freed slaves, but when Mrs. Ford offers Addy a small job to make deliveries, she is rewarded with a brand new plaid dress. A

After hemming it, Addy decides to use the scraps as a scarf for Momma. When Addy and Momma attend their first Christmas service as free people, they are surprised to find Poppa has arrived in Philadelphia. This turns out to be the best Christmas Addy could have hoped for.
