Addy Learns a Lesson

Addy and her Momma have just arrived in Philadelphia as free people. With the help of her new friend, Sarah of Trinity AME Church, they are given a warm meal and help in finding work and a place to call home.

Sarah’s mother introduces them to Mrs. Ford—a seamstress and owner of Ford’s Dress Shop. Mrs. Ford hires Momma on a trial basis and provides them with a small, furnished attic bedroom. Although the room is small, it has a window—something they didn’t have on the plantation.

Now that Momma has a paying job, Addy can go to school and learn how to read, write and do arithmetic. When Addy arrives at Sixth Street School, she meets her new teacher, Miss Dunn, a kind and intelligent woman. Addy is seated next to Harriet, a smart, popular and wealthy girl. Addy hopes she can be friends with both Sarah and Harriet, but soon learns a lesson about friendship.
