Samantha’s Victorian Valentines

For today’s program, we will be making Victorian Valentines, a craft brought to us by one of American Girl’s first characters, Samantha. Samantha’s story takes place in 1904 in Mount Bedford, New York .
Today’s craft can be found in Samantha’s Friendship Fun. The following directions will make as many valentines as you would like. We hope you enjoy Samantha’s Victorian Valentines.
Materials
Newspaper
Construction paper
Old magazines
Wrapping and tissue paper
Paper lace and dollies
Bits of ribbon and yarn
Buttons
Stickers
Scissors
White glue
2 or more friends!
Directions
Cover a table with newspaper. Then arrange all of your materials on the table.
Each guest makes a background card out of construction paper—anything from a folded card to a cutout shape.
Each guest passes their background card to their friend on the right. They add one decoration of their choice to the background card they receive, then passes the valentine on again.
Keep passing the valentines around until everyone has added decorations.
The last one friend in the assembly line might write a funny verse like this one: Roses are red, violets are blue, I’m glad I have a friend as great as you!
Did You Know: In Samantha’s time, people showed their affection by exchanging tokens such as letters, locks of hair, and small portraits. Some young ladies kept their tokens in heart-shaped silk pockets or trinket boxes.
