Julie’s Hot Dog Roll-Ups

We are so happy that you have joined us for our next program for our inaugural exhibit, American Girl: 35 Years of Strong Characters

For today’s program, we will be making Hot Dog Roll-Ups, a recipe brought to us by one of American Girl’s groovy characters, Julie. Her story takes place in 1974.

Today’s recipe can be found in Julie’s Cooking Studio. The following ingredients and directions make six servings. We hope you enjoy Julie’s Hot Dog Roll-Ups.

Ingredients

  • 6 hot dogs

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine

  • 6 slices bread

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons mustard

  • 3 slices of American or cheddar cheese

  • Pickle relish (Optional)

  • Ketchup (Optional)

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe plate

  • Fork

  • Microwave-safe bowl

  • Pastry brush

  • Cookie sheet

  • Knife

  • Tongs

  • 12 toothpicks

Directions

  1. Have an adult help you with all the steps in this recipe.

  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

  3. Place the hot dogs on the plate. Pierce each hot dog with the fork. Microwave the hot dogs on high for about 30 seconds. Set them aside.

  4. Place the butter or margarine in the bowl. Microwave on medium for about 15 seconds or until melted.

  5. Use the pastry brush to brush one side of each slice of bread with melted butter. Place the bread, butter side down, on the cookie sheet.

  6. Spread about 1/4 teaspoon of mustard on the top of each slide of bread.

  7. Cut each slide of cheese in half diagonally so that you have 6 cheese triangles. Place 1 cheese triangle on top of the mustard on each slice of bread.

  8. Use the tongs to place 1 hot dog on top of each cheese triangle.

  9. Fold the bread over the hot dog. Fasten with 2 toothpicks, 1 on each side, poking them through the bread and hot dog.

  10. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the toothpicks before eating. Top with pickle relish and serve with ketchup for dipping, if you’d like. Enjoy!

Did You Know: Oscar Mayer created the Wienermobile in 1936b to promote its products at grocery stores. Today, there are several Wienermobiles that tour the country, traveling nearly 50,000 miles a year. The people who drive Wienermobiles are called Hotdoggers. They attend “Hot Dog High” at Oscar Mayer’s headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin.
