Felicity’s Straw Hat
Materials
Sharp knife or craft knife (Be sure to have an adult help you!)
Cutting board
Ruler
Straw hat (You can find this at most craft stores)
5-foot piece of satin ribbon, 2 inches wide
Scissors
Any of the following: silk flowers, colorful feathers and extra ribbon for bows
Fabric glue
Paper towels
Directions
Have an adult help you use the knife to cut a 1-inch slit where the crown of the hat meets the brim.
Cut another 1-inch slit on the opposite side of the hat.
Starting on the underside of the hat, thread a ribbon through 1 of the slits.
Then pull the ribbon over the crown of the hat and thread it through the other slit.
Keep pulling the ribbon through the slits until you have the same length of ribbon on both sides. Then cut the ribbon ends at a slant.
If you’re using silk flowers, cut off the stems just below the blossom.
Plan your hat design. Decide what kinds and colors of flowers, feathers, and ribbons. you like best. Then arrange them on your hat to see what looks best together.
When you’re happy with your hat design, glue on your decorations. If any glue seeps through the straw, wipe it off with a paper towel.
After the glue has dried, your hat is ready to wear. Tie the ribbon ends under your chin, and you’re all set for a stroll through the garden!
