Addy’s Jump Rope

Thank you for joining us for our program today. We are so happy that you are here!

For today’s program, we will be making a Jump Rope, a craft brought to us by one of American Girl’s kind and caring characters, Addy. Addy’s story takes place in 1864 during the the Civil War.

Today’s craft can be found in Addy’s Craft Book: A Look at Crafts from the Past with Projects You Can Make Today. The following directions make one jump rope. We hope you enjoy Addy’s Jump Rope!

Materials

  • Piece of rope, at least 7 feet long

  • Scissors

  • Rulers

  • 2 macramé beads, each 1 1/2 inches wide

Directions

  1. Find the right length for your jump rope by standing in the middle of the rope and raising it in your hands until your hands are even with your shoulders. Cut off the excess length.

  2. Tie a knot about 5 inches from 1 end of the rope.

  3. Slide a macramé bead onto that end of the rope until it rests on the knot. Then tie another knot to hold the bead in place. Cut off the extra tail of rope.

  4. Tie a knot in the other end of the rope so that the length is comfortable for you when you jump. Then tie the other macramé bead onto this end of the rope in the same way.

  5. If you’re jumping rope by yourself, try hopping on 1 foot and then the other. Or try jumping rope backwards!

  6. Or grab a few friends and play Rock the Boat or Around the Clock.
