Meet Kaya, 1764
Meet Kaya, a Native American girl from the Nimíipuu, or Nez Perce tribe. Living in the Pacific Northwest in 1764, Kaya dreams of racing her beautiful mare, Steps High. When her father warns Kaya that Steps High is not ready and to watch her younger brothers, she ignores his advice and accepts a racing challenge from an annoying boy.
However, Kaya forgets to watch her brothers and her negligence earns her an awful nickname of Magpie, a little bird who only thinks of herself. Kaya is embarrassed and wants to get rid of the nickname, but her friends won’t let her forget. What can Kaya do to prove to her elders that she doesn’t only think of herself?
