Meet Ivy

Meet Ivy Ling, a talented, kind and lucky, Chinese American girl growing up in a busy household in San Francisco, California in 1974. Ivy tends to feel left out and invisible by her family as her mother is going to school to become a lawyer and her father is working two jobs to keep things afloat. To make things worse, her best friend Julie has moved across town. She loves gymnastics and feels at home when she is at practice.

When Ivy isn’t at gymnastics or school, she is at Chinese school, which she finds boring, or eating Chinese food at her grandparents, Gung Gung and Po Po’s restaurant. But when Ivy finds out that the big gymnastics tournament is scheduled for the same day as her family reunion, Ivy has a difficult choice to make. With her family’s help, Ivy learns she can make her own luck.

Introduced to children in 2007 as Julie's best friend, Ivy Ling and her story represent the feminist and societal changes of America during the mid-1970s, as well as Chinese-American culture. Her story takes place in San Francisco, California in 1974.

Renowned author Lisa Yee wrote Ivy’s story. Two movies about Julie were released in 2015 and 2017 starring Grace Liu and Nina Lu as Ivy. Ivy and her entire collection were archived in 2014.
