Kaya meets a young warrior woman named Swan Circling, who is brave and fearless; traits Kaya wants to emulate to those around her. She tends to those who are wounded, brings fresh food to the horses and even goes into battles with the men of her community. Kaya believes that if she were as strong as Swan Circling, she would be able to find a way to save her blind sister, Speaking Rain.
Kaya wants to be friends with Swan Circling very much. However, when she finds out that Swan Circling knows that the children call her Magpie, a nickname that she was given for being careless, she fears that Swan Circling won’t want to be friends. Then something horrible happens. How can Kaya help?
